It's that time of the week again when we learn buzzwords in the educational technology industry. Our topic for this week: the "Internet of Things" or "IoT" for short.
The term, "the Internet of Things" has been around since the late 90's and early 2000's, but the meaning and the presumptions surrounding it have been evolving as technologies have become smarter and smarter throughout the years
Think of smart toasters that remember your preferences so that it gives you the ideal toast - every time. Imagine your refrigerator sending you a message that you need to buy milk, eggs, and bacon on the way home - because it knows that you're out and you have those for breakfast every Tuesday. Visualize a smart ID card you can carry around that acts like a master key - giving you automatic and exclusive access to your car, your home, your office, your computer, and even your bank account at the ATM.
The internet of things is not just limited to improving human lives, it can also be used for media, inventory tracking, transportation, and healthcare - just to name a few. And yes, you guessed it! It can also be used for learning! (Which I will discuss in another post)
So, here's a short video explaining the internet of things further (and as fast as possible). Kudos to our friends over at Techquickie! Cheers!
