A few years back - 2011, to be exact, the Philippines decided to revamp its current education system and replace it with the K-12. There were some adjustments within the past few years ( I should know - I have 3 kids in the K-12 system); and as of SY 2014, the K-12 system is already fully implemented.
Here are three ways that the Minreeva team thinks (based on our experience) we elearning developers can leverage on the Philippines' K-12 Curriculum
For us instructional designers and e-learning creators, the K-12 curriculum was somewhat a blessing. Our team's experience is that it makes the continuity of our modules quite easier. The K-12 curriculum basically takes learning concepts and uses a "building blocks" approach to lessons. This means that the lessons from K-12 are tackled yearly; however, they increase in complexity and difficulty each year.
2. The Curriculum is Standard
One of the best things about K-12 is that the curriculum is standard across the board. With its implementation, all schools were required to adhere to the Philippines' K-12 curriculum in order to get certified and continue operations. The advantage that this gives us instructional designers/e-learning developers - or at least the Minreeva Team - is that when we develop modules on a certain subject or topic for a certain grade level, it means that it can be used by all the students on that grade from all Philippine schools,
3. The Curriculum is Readily Available
This is another advantage that the Philippines' K-12 curriculum provides. Unlike before wherein each school has its own curriculum (and some schools being more advanced than others), the curriculum for most, if not all, subjects are readily available. With the Department of Education also leveraging on technology, the K-12 curriculum for major subjects are now available for download through the DepED website. This therefore means that everyone, especially us e-learning designers, have access to them.
